Judith Scott is an artist, a sculptress, who works from a very unusual space: the isolation caused by her handicap. She was born with Down’s Syndrome, at the age of seven she was thought to be unteachable, she didn’t speak. Severely mentally retarded. That was the diagnosis and the reason why she was separated from her family. No one realized that she was deaf until she was 40 years old. She spent most of her life forgotten, shut away in institutions. She is now a recognized artist. Her works have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the world and are highly valued. Art that has got nothing to do with reason. The solitary, profound, mysterious expression of the soul. That is what she offers us.

O filme Professor, aqui quem fala é seu aluno surdo é uma animação em técnica mista produzida com um grupo de alunos surdos de 6 a 12 anos, a partir de um roteiro desenvolvido com base em depoimentos de jovens surdos sobre as suas vivências. O filme aborda as situações enfrentadas na escola e apresenta sugestões dos alunos para o professor melhorar a transmissão de conteúdos escolares, a comunicação na sala de aula e a interação com os colegas na escola. As falas enfatizam a importância da língua de sinais para garantir a participação das crianças na sala de aula.
This is an animated film made by a group of deaf students between 6 and 12 years of age. Based upon young deaf people’s statements about their own experiences, the film touches key situations inside schools. It presents the suggestions students make to their teachers in order to help them improve their work: the approach to the subjects, the communication inside the classroom and the relationship between classmates. The speeches emphasize the important role Sign Language has in granting deaf children to participate equally in the classroom.

Doménique é um adolescente que tem Síndrome de Tourette. Como ele mesmo diz, é como se tivesse soluço cerebral. O que acontece quando outras crianças fazem troça de suas caretas involuntárias? Como alguém se sente quando o vigia de uma loja o confunde com um ladrão? E quando, no ônibus, parecem pensar que ele tem um “parafuso solto”? Na intimidade, Doménique se sente exatamente como um menino da sua idade a diferença é que tem tiques. Ele não se esconde, gosta da companhia dos amigos. Mais importante: ele encontrou amigos que o aceitam e compreendem.
Doménique is a teenager and has Tourette Syndrome. As he says himself, it’s a bit like having hiccups in your brain. He was ten years old when the illness was diagnosed. What is it like when other children make fun of him because of the faces he pulls? How does he feel when his involuntary head movements make the store detective think he is a shop-lifter? What is it like for him when people on the bus stare at him as though he ”had a screw loose”? Inside himself Doménique feels just the same as all the other boys of his age if it weren’t for these tics. Doménique doesn’t hide himself away. He likes company. Most important of all, he has found friends that accept him and understand him.

Tobias Prenen era um violoncelista bem-sucedido. Após uma parada cardíaca, em 1997, sua vida teve uma mudança drástica. Tobias Prenen used to be a successful cellist. Following heart failure in 1997, his life took a dramatic turn. He was in a coma for several weeks and, when he woke up, he turned out to be physically and mentally handicapped. At the age of 39, Tobias found himself in a wheelchair and was no longer able to talk or play the cello. According to his family and his best friend, Tobias cannot be happy in this state. But he regularly says that he is very happy. Everyone is wrestling with the question whether the Tobias they once knew would like to have lived on as today’s Tobias.

Przemek is paralyzed since birth. He also can’t speak but his mind is sound. The Boy tried to communicate with environment but nobody understood him until he was 16 years old, when he was introduced to the BLISS language. Right now he writes poetry and wins prizes.
