A fala tem poder e se impõe como forma superior de comunicação, forçando pessoas surdas a aprenderem a repetir sons que não conseguem ouvir. É um esforço tremendo – e é desgastante. Até que, muitas vezes chega o momento em que o surdo descobre que foi inútil o tempo em que tentou aprender algo que simplesmente não lhe servia. O filme pretende mostrar um caminho de descoberta, dúvida, silêncio, alegria, aceitação, incompreensão e afirmação.
Oral Language is powerful and it establishes itself as a main way of communication, forcing deaf people to learn and repeat sounds that they can’t hear. It is a great effort – and very exhausting for them. And frequently, there comes a moment when the deaf realize that all time spent trying to learn all this was pointless. The film intends to show a path of discovery, doubt, silence, happiness, acceptance, incomprehension and affirmation.

Jasha é um jovem estudante de artes surdo, que não liga muito para o mundo ouvinte. Mas não tem como fugir desse mundo se quiser realizar suas ambições. Armado com sua câmera, ele visita a única moradia européia para idosos surdos e tenta descobrir como essas pessoas levaram suas vidas. Eles contam sobre sua juventude, quando a língua de sinais era proibida, e sobre sua luta contra constrangimentos e indignidades. A comunidade surda da Holanda é pequena e (como na maioria dos países) sua língua de sinais não é oficialmente reconhecida pelo governo. A luta pelo acesso e pela igualdade de oportunidades de trabalho e participação na sociedade está no topo da agenda do Movimento Surdo.
Jascha is a young deaf art student who doesn’t take much care about the hearing world. But he can’t escape it if he wants to fulfill his ambitions. Armed with a camera, he visits Europe’s only home for elderly deaf people and tries to find out how these people have lived their lives. They tell him about their youth, when sign language was forbidden, and about their struggles against embarrassment and indignities. The deaf community in The Netherlands is small and(as in most countries) its sign language is not officially recognized by the government. The denial of access, of equal opportunities to live, work and participate in society are on top of the agenda of the Deaf movement.
