Four years ago, a contemporary dance group was created at the APAE (an institution for assistance of disabled children), in the small city of Arcos, by the choreographer and dancer Donizetti Bernardes. The film shows the success achieved by the students and the positive influence dance has had in their lives.

Judith Scott is an artist, a sculptress, who works from a very unusual space: the isolation caused by her handicap. She was born with Down’s Syndrome, at the age of seven she was thought to be unteachable, she didn’t speak. Severely mentally retarded. That was the diagnosis and the reason why she was separated from her family. No one realized that she was deaf until she was 40 years old. She spent most of her life forgotten, shut away in institutions. She is now a recognized artist. Her works have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the world and are highly valued. Art that has got nothing to do with reason. The solitary, profound, mysterious expression of the soul. That is what she offers us.

Tobias Prenen era um violoncelista bem-sucedido. Após uma parada cardíaca, em 1997, sua vida teve uma mudança drástica. Ele ficou em coma por várias semanas e, quando acordou, estava física e mentalmente lesado. Aos 39 anos, Tobias viu-se em uma cadeira de rodas, sem conseguir falar nem tocar violoncelo. Segundo sua família e seus melhores amigos, Tobias não pode ser feliz neste estado. Mas ele sempre diz que está bastante feliz. Todos discutem se o Tobias que eles conheciam gostaria de ter sobrevivido como o Tobias de agora.
Tobias Prenen used to be a successful cellist. Following heart failure in 1997, his life took a dramatic turn. He was in a coma for several weeks and, when he woke up, he turned out to be physically and mentally handicapped. At the age of 39, Tobias found himself in a wheelchair and was no longer able to talk or play the cello. According to his family and his best friend, Tobias cannot be happy in this state. But he regularly says that he is very happy. Everyone is wrestling with the question whether the Tobias they once knew would like to have lived on as today’s Tobias.

Neste documentário, Susan Hamovitch tenta reconstruir o passado de sua família, vencendo a insegurança e possibilitando um encontro novo e único com seu irmão.
Alan, director Susan Hamovitch´s brother, was born in 1950 with a brain so severely damaged he would never develop the ability to speak. Alan became a secret suddenly. In 1958, he was sent to live in Letchworth Village, a state-run institution for people with mental retardation. And after that day, almost all mention of him within the home virtually ceased. The shroud of secrecy that surrounded Alan’s disappearance has prompted the filmmaker to probe delicately but persistently beneath the surface of the family’s silence: to find answers to why and how Alan’s placement occurred, and why so much was left unsaid.
